DES can be the cause of many different things including but not limited to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) where the glands in the eyes do not release the oils found in tears, decreased tear production which occurs with aging, pregnancy and certain medications and increased tear evaporation with allergies, dry air settings and blinking less than normal.
